Leave behind Hollywood impressions of pre-historic times as you travel to Joggins Fossil Cliffs to discover a place where the fascinating ancient world meets the breathtaking natural world. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site of universal value, this is the only place on earth where visitors can view rare fossils of plants and animals preserved in the place where they originally lived.
Located on Nova Scotia’s famous Bay of Fundy, the power of the world’s highest tides crash onto 60-foot sandstone reefs and cliffs, revealing life from more than 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period. With each tide, new and incredible geological and paleontological riches are continually exposed by erosion and are just waiting to be discovered. These include upright trees, ferns and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
A walk on the beach at Joggins truly is a walk through time. With careful observation visitors may find fossils on the beach that have fallen from the cliff, or you can view the spectacular sandstone layers that entomb ancestors of the first dinosaurs. The Joggins Fossil Cliffs have inspired some of the world’s leading scientists, including Charles Darwin, Sir William Dawson and Charles Lyell and is a place where the world’s oldest reptiles were discovered, making this one of the most important sites in evolutionary science.
Visitors from around the world have carried on the tradition of discovery and research at Joggins and our brand new, environmentally sustainable Visitor Centre is the perfect place to expand your experience. We provide knowledgeable staff, interactive displays, educational programming, the superb Roundhouse Café where you can enjoy a steamed coffee and home baked cake and a beautiful gift shop, which stocks unusual, locally made and Fair Trade crafts.
An incredible place for the young, the old and obviously, the very, very, very old, Joggins Fossil Cliffs offers an experience of discovery, of adventure, of beauty and amazement.

I loved this place. The cliffs are spectacular and the guided tour of the beach and cliffs was one of the high points of our holiday.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and even though we dont know much about fossils we found ourselves excited by the prospect of finding something that people had never seen before. The cafe food was really good and I wish that we had been able to bring our grandchildren as they would have loved it too.
Perhaps next time!
