The Grenfell Historic Properties tell the amazing story of a young adventurer, a compassionate medical doctor, an altruistic missionary and a committed philanthropist. Born in England, Dr. Wilfred Thomason Grenfell came to Northern Newfoundland and Labrador in 1892 to investigate the conditions of fishermen on this remote and rugged coast. He was so moved by the appalling levels of poverty endured by the fishermen and the local population that he returned the following year and began what turned out to be a lifetime of unforgettable service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Strolling quietly through the Grenfell House Museum, you get a sense of this man and his love of a people, a land and their spirit and what made him so determined to improve their way of life. Dr Grenfell commissioned this house in 1909 and it stands today, overlooking the harbour and filled with displays and artifacts that chronicle the adventures and accomplishments that made Grenfell renowned and revered around the world.
Dr. Grenfell, a firm believer in helping people do things for themselves, became a driving force in the economic development of the area. He was instrumental in forming a fisherman’s co-operative, a co-operative lumber mill, opening the first orphanage, Newfoundland’s first inter-denominational school, and he introduced a barter system whereby patients could trade craft items they had produced, in return for medical services.
The Grenfell Interpretation Centre houses the well-known Grenfell Handicrafts, where you can view and purchase the beautiful and unique work of local crafters. In addition, an extensive gallery of displays and interpretive panels recount the work of the Grenfell Mission and Dr. Grenfell.
A visit to the Grenfell Historic properties is nothing if not inspirational. It is an homage to a man who contributed greatly to the heritage & ultimate success of the people of Northern Newfoundland. It is the story of a man of which the world needs more.
